Abies is a pyramidal-shaped, spreading and evergreen tree that may reach up to 50 m tall in cool parts of the northern hemisphere. Lower twigs slightly overhang. Dark green, needle-like leaves are in whorl. There are two distinct stoma bands beneath the leaves. The leaves have acute tip or are with serrated margins; the cones are erect on the shoots. They grow well in warm climates but do not tolerate lime soil. They do well in high relative humidity during rainy and cool summer months. They do not need too much light and endure shadows. There are endemic varieties in Turkey. They are grown in parks, gardens, and alongside the roads.
