They are evergreen plants growing up to 20-25 m. There are dwarf, semi-dwarf and tree species of Pinus. The leaves may be colorful depending on the species. There are two types of leaves: Scale leaves are single and arranged spirally on the shoots. Scales leaves are lost two weeks later and replaced with 2, 3, and 5 (rarely 8) needle-type leaves on the buds or on the petioles. The bark gets thicker by age, and has deep grooves. There are some species tolerating to -40°C. They can be used as solitary.
