Description
This family contains 40 genera and 600 species. They are naturally grown in tropical and subtropical regions although they are native to East Asia and Himalayas. Melia can grow up to 10-15 m and is a deciduous tree. Branches are rare. Bark has vertical grooves. 2-5 cm long leaflets are ovate, elliptical with serrated margins. Lilac flowers appear in panicles on petiole in the spring. Because they grow fast, they are planted as family trees in Turkey. Besides benefited from melia oil extracted from melia tree, fruits of Melia are used for making necklace. They like sunny areas and pervious soil; minimum temperature required is -5° C.
