Description
Aesculus, native in Asia and Europe, is a large deciduous tree, commonly known as Horse-chestnut tree. It has approximately 19 species. The leaves are palmately compound with 5–9 leaflets of which each leaflet, with serrated margins or straight edge, is 13–30 cm long. It has pink and white flowers blossoming in May. Flowers are showy, insect-pollinated, with four or five petals fused into a lobed corolla tube, arranged in a panicle inflorescence. The flowers are produced around an erect long panicle. The fruit matures to an unsmooth or flat capsule. Aesculus likes sunny or half-shadow positions but is not ideal for landscape around walking tracks and car parks.
