They can be found in Thrace, Aegean, Marmara, Northern Anatolia and Eastern Anatolia Regions. They are wide and round at the top, and may reach up to 20-25 m height. They form pyramidal top at first, but later, turn into straggling round top, and are deciduous in winter. The bark is gray, thin, smooth, seamless and well-grooved. The leaves are with spiny margin, 7-10 cm long, obovate in panicles on buds. They are cultivated in temperate climate under full sun or in shady places in dry-humid or wet calcareous and clay soil. They like sun, and can be shaped by pruning.
