Description
Betula, also known as birch tree, is mostly natives of Asia, Europe and North America, with 40 species reaching up to 15-20 m. There are five Betula species cultivated in Turkey of which one of them is endemic. Twigs become pendent as tree ages. White bark is one of most notable characteristics. The leaves are obovate, deltoid or generally spur-like, and with serrated margins. They like wet and cool regions, and are fast growing trees. The bark of birch tree is grayish brown in the early stages, then separates into thin, papery plates, and eventually whitens. The leaves are light green; however they turn yellow in fall. They like partial shade and sunny areas. They can be planted in the parks, gardens, and also be used as roadside trees.
