Description

Berberis is a genus of about 450-500 species of deciduous and evergreen shrubs up to 1.5 m tall, found throughout the temperate and subtropical regions of the world. There are some species having entire leaves or with spiny or serrated margins. The leaves may be yellow, green, red-green or red depending on the variety. Generally, shrub species have thorny shoots and lenticels. Their wood contains “berberine”. Gemmas are structured in panicles. They can be pruned. Due to its thorny characteristic, it is not recommended to plant on playgrounds in landscape; however they can be planted as pedestrian barriers or solitary in the gardens and parks. There are some species that can be cultivated in terraced roof balconies. They can be planted in front of narrow gardens and apartment blocks, as well.
